Did you see that John Axford might get the call for the Brewers? The guy was low level filler for the Yanks a few years ago, and now he’s on the cusp of being called up? My Mo, the NL is pathetic.
Triple-A Scranton
Game 1 (2-1 win over Rochester in 7 innings) makeup of a June 30th rain out
Brett Gardner, Austin Jackson, Juan Miranda & Cody Ransom: all 0 for 3 – Miranda & Ransom eached K’ed once
Kevin Russo: 3 for 3, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 SB
Shelley Duncan: 1 for 3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K – RBI #99, so he’s got two more games to get to 100
John Rodriguez: 2 for 3, 1 R, 1 2B
Reegie Corona: 1 for 2, 1 BB, 1 SB
Chris Stewart: 0 for 2, 1 K
The Ghost of Kei Igawa: 7 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 1 WP, 5-10 GB/FB – 74 of 106 pitches were strikes (69.8%) … with Josh Towers in the bigs & Jason Hirsh getting hurt last night, they’re going to need him to be sharp if they plan on going anywhere in the postseason
Game 2 (2-1 win over Rochester in 9 innings, walk-off style)
Kevin Russo & Freddy Guzman: both 0 for 4 – Russo drove in the winning run with a walk-off sac fly & K’ed … Guzman K’ed twice
Austin Jackson & Shelley Duncan: both 1 for 4 – Jackson scored a run & K’ed … Shelley K’ed
Cody Ransom: 2 for 4, 1 R, 1 3B
Colin Curtis: 0 for 3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Reegie Corona: 1 for 3, 1 K – 11 for his last 27 (.407)
Doug Bernier: 1 for 2, 1 BB
Brian Peterson: 0 for 2, 2 K, 1 E (missed catch)
Romulo Sanchez: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, 0-3 GB/FB – 13 of 22 pitches were strikes (59.1%) … this was just a tuneup for the playoffs, he’ll likely start Game One on Tuesday
Anthony Claggett: 2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, 1 HB, 2-4 GB/FB – 19 of 34 pitches were strikes (55.9%)
Eric Wordekemper: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 6-2 GB/FB – 20 of 31 pitches were strikes (64.5%)
Kevin Whelan: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 Er, 0 BB, 5 K, 1-0 GB/FB – 21 of 30 pitches were strikes (70%) … 6 H, 4 BB, 0 R, 17 K in his last 9 IP … he’s always had a great, great arm, but the lack of command has always held him back
Humberto Sanchez: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 2-0 GB/FB – half of his 14 pitches were strikes
Scranton has already clinched it’s fourth straight division title. The first came when they were still affiliated with the Phillies, the last three have come under the Yankees’ watch. They’ll take on either Durham or Gwinnett in Round One (best-of-five series) of the playoffs when they start on Sept. 9th.
Double-A Trenton (6-4 loss to New Britain)
Austin Krum & James Cooper: both 1 for 4 – Krum K’ed … Coop tripled, drove in three & scored a run

Marcos Vechionacci: 1 for 3, 1 RBI, 2 K
Jason Stephens: 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 4-9 GB/FB – easily his worst start with AA … if you had up all the ER he’s allowed, you’d have to go all the way back to early July to get to 4
Josh Schmidt: 1.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 1 HB, 1-1 GB/FB – dude’s been a beast all year for them, it’s shame he gets stuck with the blown save and the loss in the game that effectively ends their season
Grant Duff: 1.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 5-0 GB/FB
So with the loss, Trenton has been eliminated from postseason play. They’re the two time defending champs, but they won’t get a chance to defend their title. You’d have to think that if Jesus Montero and Jorge Vazquez never got hurt, they probably would have picked up those two extra wins they needed to get into the postseason. Tomorrow’s game is the last of the regular season, and will be played for pure fun. Don’t be surprised if you see guys like Schmidt, Duff, and Zach McAllister bumped up for the AAA playoffs.

Jairo Heredia: 0.1 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K – 12 baserunners & 13 R allowed in his last 2.1 IP … not exactly how he wanted to finish the season
Brad Rulon: 2.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 3-4 GB/FB
Manny Banuelos: 1 IP, zeroes, 2 K, 1-0 GB/FB – nice & easy Hi-A debut … he’s a nice reinforcement to add for the playoffs
Trenton Lare: 2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 1-3 GB/FB – another callup that will be nice to have around in the playoffs

Adam Olbrychowski: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 3-4 GB/FB – I’m confused … he pitched in this game, but Mike Ashmore has pictures of him with Trenton today … hmmm
Jon Ortiz: 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 1-0 GB/FB – one thing Tampa will have in the playoffs is a lock down pen with Ortiz, Hovis, and of course, Pat Vendizzle
Tampa has already clinched a postseason berth and will take on Brevard County in Round One (best-of-three) of the playoffs when they start on Sept. 8th.
Low-A Charleston (6-1 loss to Savannah)
Jose Pirela & Melky Mesa: both 0 for 4, 1 K – Pirela drew a walk … Mesa is 0 for his last 12 and his AVG is down to .228, but he did throw a runner out at second from CF

Andrew Brackman: 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 2-3 GB/FB – 10 IP, 6 H 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K in his last 4 outings, so we have some progress
Paul Heidler: 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K1-3 GB/FB
Charleston did not qualify for the playoffs. Their regular season ends tomorrow.
Short Season Staten Island (11-2 loss to Vermont)

This was Staten Island’s final game of the regular season; they finished the year 47-29. They won the McNamara Division and finished with the second best record in the NY-Penn League. Robert Pimpsner says Adam Warren will get the game the ball in Game One of their best-of-three series against Lowell in Round One of the playoffs when they start on Sept. 8th. Here’s his playoff preview. There’s a chance they’ll face a rehabbing Dice-K during the series.
The Rookie GCL Yanks season is over after they lost to the GCL Marlins in Round One of the playoffs. The GCL Nats won the league championship.
