Top stories from last week:
- The week opened with four games against the Indians in Cleveland and Shane Greene led the team to a win in the opener in his first career start. The Tribe roughed up Masahiro Tanaka the next day. Jacoby Ellsbury’s extra-innings homer gave the Yankees a win on Wednesday before the bullpen melted down spectacularly in Thursday’s loss.
- The Yankees traveled to Baltimore for three games with the Orioles to round out the first half. The O’s won the first game in walk-off fashion, then Greene threw a gem and carried New York to a win the next day. The Yankees lost the rain-shortened rubber game yesterday.
- Injury Updates: Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) has a partially torn ligament and rehab has been recommended. He apologized for the injury and Tommy John surgery remains a possibility. CC Sabathia (knee) is seeking more opinions. Carlos Beltran (concussion) was placed on the disabled list after he managed to hit himself in the face with a ball during batting practice. Michael Pineda (shoulder) threw a 25-pitch bullpen session and reported no problems. Jose Ramirez was placed on the Triple-A DL.
- Brian Cashman said he will continue to aggressively pursue upgrades “unless I’m told otherwise.” They Yankees do not have much interest in A.J. Burnett and they are not included in Cole Hamels’ no-trade list. Cashman has called the Cubs about their young shortstop surplus.
- The Yankees acquired Jeff Francis (and cash!) from the Athletics for a player to be named later just to add a warm body to the staff. Bryan Mitchell and Yangervis Solarte were called up while Zoilo Almonte and Bruce Billings were sent down at various points this week.
- The Yankees signed ninth round pick SS Vince Conde (above-slot $155k). They also signed Venezuelan OF Raymundo Moreno ($600k) as well as several other low-profile international free agents.
- Luis Severino was ranked as one of the 50 best prospects in the game by both Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus.
