- Masahiro Tanaka made his Grapefruit League debut on Thursday and looked sharp in two perfect innings. His elbow has been a non-issue so far this spring. CC Sabathia, meanwhile, will make his spring debut on Tuesday.
- Injury Updates: Chris Capuano (quad) will miss several weeks with a Grade II strain. Ivan Nova (elbow) will soon begin throwing curveballs as he rehabs from Tommy John surgery. Luis Severino (strep throat) missed a few days but has returned to action. Brendan Ryan (back) is expected to take regular batting practice this week. Didi Gregorius (leg) has a bruise but is otherwise fine after being hit by a pitch. Chase Headley (fingers) is fine after taking a bad hop during a fielding drill.
- The Yankees have “come the closest” to acquiring Cole Hamels but a deal isn’t imminent. The Phillies have interest in the out of options Austin Romine. The Yankees discussed a Jason Heyward/Andrelton Simmons trade with the Braves early in the offseason.
- Hideki Matsui has been hired as a special assistant to the GM and will work with the team’s minor leaguers. Severino and Aaron Judge topped MLB.com’s list of the top 30 Yankees prospects.
